Monthly Change in the CPI: Graph of the Week 9/17/2012
The Graph of the Week shows the monthly (not annualized) percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers, all items. The range is from January, 1980 through August 2012
The data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, downloaded from FRED, the St. Louis Fed's Economic Database. The mean change over this period was 0.3% a month, with a high of 1.4% (a couple of months in 1980) and the lowest it ever dropped in a month was November, 2008 (back when we were worrying about deflation).
In August 2012 it was up 0.6%, or about double its average over this time period. If you've bought gas or beef lately, you will know why.
