The Graph of the Week shows total non-farm employment, in thousands, for the US from January, 1980 through last month
The data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Situation release, downloaded from FRED, the St. Louis Fed's Economic Database.
Total employment reached its maximum in January, 2008 at 13,8023,000 just before the Great Recession hit, and then bottomed out in February 2010. Since then, it has rebounded to 13,300,000, roughly 500,000 jobs under its peak.
